Dripping opulence – brightly polished floor to ceiling wood panels, back-lit female nude panels from Lalique, chandeliers from Murano, generous gold leafing and embellishments, leopard print leather chairs to sink into – The Rivoli Bar is celebrated designer Tessa Kennedy’s little “glittering jewellery box” at The Ritz London.

Champagne has been an “essential part of the unique Ritz lifestyle” ever since The Ritz London opened its doors on Piccadilly in 1906. And the offerings at The Rivoli Bar seldom disappoint. I was almost tempted by the on-going Louis Roederer promotion till I spotted a rarity – Champagne Barons de Rothschild Reserve Ritz Brut NV.

Launched in 2016, this special cuvée was specially created for The Ritz London to celebrate the art de vivre and to eternalize the dream of the founder, César Ritz “to offer all the refinements that a prince could wish for in his own home”. While launching the Ritz Reserve, the President of Champagne Barons de Rothschild, Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, assured guests that this label receives the same attention to quality and detail as the other champagnes.
Champagne Barons de Rothschild is a collaborative effort of the three different branches of the family – Eric, Philippe Sereys, Philippine, Ariane and Benjamin – who united to launch a champagne under their common name. It is made from the finest terroirs in the region to the exacting standards of excellence of the family by the champagne co-operative La Goutte d’Or in Vertus (owners of the brand Paul Goerg).

A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from grand cru vineyards in equal measure. Matured on lees for four years. Low dosage of 6 g/l. Rich and complex. A lovely mousse settles into a pale golden colour (might have been inspired by the opulent gold in the Rivoli Bar). Fresh. Creamy. Very expressive fruit. Lovely balance of acidity. Pure. Refreshingly delicious...
